Kamloops River's Spring Run-Off 2012
After a scare on Saturday when it snowed for 6 hours, race day dawned clear and sunny, the snow had gone as quickly as it had come, and even the gravel portion of the course was dry and smooth. Kelowna's John Machuga (M30-34) continued his fine early season form in taking his second straight 10K win over Merritt's Hans Aabye(M34-39), 33:35 to 34:30. Machuga took the lead early, and increased his margin steadily. Masters runners filled five of the next seven spots, with local runner Richard Brewster (M45-49, 35:38) outlasting Vernon's Trevor Jordan (M45-49, 35:54) and Penticton's Sergio Pio (M45-49, 36:48) The top ten men broke the magic 40 minutes.
On the women's side, Riki-Lynn Boettcher (F30-34) of Kelowna took her first IRA victory in 43:12, with Tiffany Fowler (F40-44) a few steps back in 43:13. Local runner Mandy Sellars (F40-44) captured third in 43:31.
In the age-graded standings, Liz Borrett (F70-74) continued her early season dominance with a clear win over Laurelee Nelson (F55-59) in a time of 32:52 to Nelson's 35:54, with Diane Leonard (F65-69) a close third in 35:58. Race winner Boettcher fell to 12th A-G. Brewster topped the men's age-graded statistics in a fine 31:55, with Jordan second in 32:40. Local runner Jack Miller (M65-69) came home third in 33:10, handily outpacing his TRU students!
Rookie race directors Wes Kibble and Reggie Black, along the many volunteers from the organizing club, the Kamloops Ridge Runners, presented a smoothly run event which even featured pizza as a post-race nosh, and there were two pairs of shoes awarded to lucky runners.
For the second race in a row, attendance was down from last year - please bring your friends to the next event, the Oliver 10K on April 15. This is another flat course, and there is wine!
