2011 Dave Reed 5K (BC Championship)
IRA representatives Cindy Rhodes and Rick Jenkner were in Vancouver March 26 for a BC Athletics meeting, which had been scheduled to coincide with the BC 5K Championships. Rhodes continued her outstanding 2011 record, by finishing second overall on age-grading, only .01% away from the victor Jim Swadling. Rhodes is now the BC Champion in the F50-54 division in a time of 19:34.
The overall pace of this race was much faster than our recent Lakeside 5K, with six runners under 16 minutes. Matt Clout (M20-34) took the win in 15:02, and Andrew McCartney (M20-34) was second in 15:38, just one tick ahead of David Palermo (M20-34). Natasha Wodak (F20-34) was first for the women in 16:53, ahead of Shauna Skinner (F20-34), 17:38, and junior sensation Tanya Humeniuk, 17:41. Of a field of 239 finishers, 74 broke 20 minutes, whereas at the Lakeside 5K, only 17 out of 255 did.
Bruce Wark of Merritt finished third in M55-59 in 18:39, ahead your president and reporter Jenkner, sixth in 20:56. Wayne Pehowich of Kamloops took tenth in M60-64 in 30:23.
This race was my first experience with the disposable timing chip (attached to the race number) and it did provide fast results, with only one error apparent at the awards ceremony. Apparently, it is cost competitive with the price to rent the regular chip. Much to the surprise of the BCA committee, there appeared to be no backup timing system in the event of a power failure or other glitch.
This was my first lower mainland race in about seven years, and it was nice to renew old acquaintances, although sadly, Dave Reed is no longer among them. Dave's brother Mark made an appearance to give out the medals.
