2010 Starting Block 10K
Clear roads and a calm day resulted in fast times for many runners as Penticton's Jeff Symonds capped a 3-peat victory with a new course record of 32:11 to avenge his midirection loss at last year's Peak to Beak, while Vernon's Sarah Clark also took her third victory, breaking 40 minutes for the first time on the course (new masters record 39:50, W40-44), and placing 18th overall. Sarah Bailey improved her course record in W16-19 with 41:20, and placed second in the women's race, while the evergreen Cindy Rhodes took third, breaking her own course record for W50-54 (41:33). Vernon's Aaron Heidt was second overall with a new M30-34 record of 32:26, and Mark Bomba, former multiple winner of the race, finished third overall and set a new masters record of 33:55.
A record 236 runners completed the Lavington course and there were several other age group records set. Shirley Gray of Summerland had an impressive performance, pushed all the way by Diane Leonard to a new W65-69 record by over 7 minutes (52:01). Leonard finished just two seconds back. Sixteen year old Joel Johnson shattered the old mark in M16-19, running 34:49 for fourth overall. An additional 24 runners completed the 3K fun run, with the youngest three year old Madeline Sellars, daughter of the RD, and the oldest Shirley Lewis, 79.
